ABOUT US

Greetings, Curious Gamer.

House of Cardboard started as the Player One | Player Two Podcast, a way of my wife Kathleen and I to talk about gaming for two. Then we began recording podcasts, although our first host of episodes eventually got scrapped because we didn’t like how we originally formatted them. Here’s our second run at it, this time with a fresh format, and a blog to accompany the episodes.

There’s a ton of information out there regarding board games. It’s cliche–albeit true–to say that we’re living in a golden age of analog gaming, and in this golden age it’s hard not to Google a rules question without hitting a dozen sites covering that particular game. Surprisingly, however, we’ve found that the amount of content aimed specifically at two players is substantially narrower.

Beyond just that, Kathleen and I ourselves have always felt like we’ve been in a bit of a bubble in regards to the hobby. We don’t have a regular gaming group, so we very limited access to play games with larger groups or discuss games in a broader sense. This podcast is our way of opening our door and bringing you into our small gaming circle.

Kathleen and I met back in 2007, began dating in 2008, got married in 2012, and had our son, Hank, in 2017. Games have been a major part of our lives since about 2012 or so. Our participation in the hobby has only grown over the past few years, and we wanted to find an outlet to not only talk about games, but hopefully share what we’ve learned and maybe help a few people who may be in a similar situation to us.

In addition to reviews and podcast episodes, we’ll also have editorials discussing various aspects of the hobby. Given how much the world has changed since we started documenting our participation in the hobby, we want to generate open and honest dialogues about difficult subjects in gaming, like representation, cultural appropriation, and the broader role of games in our lives.

Board gaming is a great social hobby, but as two player-only gamers, it sometimes feels like a vacuum. This website and our podcast will hopefully help our world grow a little bit.

Thanks for reading!
